Albox

A short drive inland into the mountains you will find small villages and towns such as Albox, a must on Tuesday when the surrounding locals come into the Rambla (a dry river bed). From there they sell or buy anything from chickens, rabbits or goats to trees or tractors. The neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) hanging everywhere, dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage), etc. The stalls go on street after street selling materials, local craft. In fact selling just about everything one could imagine.

Yes just 30 minutes drive from the coast and you are in real Spain with its traditional customs and ways. Slip deeper inland to small villages such as Taberno that has a fuente común (drinking water spring) yes crystal clear mountain water for drinking. Next to that an old wash house built many years ago where the locals still prefer to wash their clothing by hand.

Mojacar

Mojacar a white hilltop village that overlooks the sea.

This very picturesque village with its narrow streets and breath taking views is well worth a visit with its little bars, cafes and restaurants, tucked away. Where you can enjoy anything from a tapa (a tradition here), such as sliced ham off the bone with fresh bread and a glass of beer, to a huge plate of paella or a three course meal for a fraction of the price in England.

Then wander around the narrow streets covered in flowers, pot plants hanging everywhere. Go into the local craft shops, gift shops etc. English is widely spoken so no problems there.

Then take a seat in the shade of course under a tree and cool off with an ice cold drink or ice cream. if that is not enough stroll down to the Mojácar Playa that spreads all along the water edge. Where all facilities are available. Keep an eye on the dazzling blue sea, where often schools of dolphins are seen. Then at night if its discos dancing or just relaxing if you want Mojácar has it all.
